Heavy demand for coins featuring characters created by illustrator Miki Muster

As expected, Banka Slovenije is seeing an exceptional level of interest from the general public in the numismatic products to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of illustrator Miki Muster. The proof-quality numismatic products have already sold out. They remain available to those who reserved them in the advance online ordering during the spring. BU-quality commemorative coins and sets of 2025 coins are still available for purchase. All fans of numismatic products are recommended to sign up to our numismatic news service.

In cooperation with the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Slovenia, every year Banka Slovenije issues occasional coins marking significant historical events, and achievements in the fields of science, sport, culture or elsewhere. Larger quantities of BU coins are minted, while the proof-quality coins are produced in smaller quantities. These mainly face demand from collectors of numismatic products.

So far this year we have issued a collector coin celebrating Nova Gorica and Gorizia as the 2025 European Capital of Culture, the in late November set of 2025 coins, and a commemorative coin marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miki Muster. The last of these in particular has spurned huge interest from the public.

Banka Slovenije was expecting heavy demand from the public for coins featuring characters created by Miki Muster, even from non-collectors. A total of 990,000 commemorative coins of BU quality were released for sale. These coins are legal tender in all euro area countries. In addition, 6,000 sets of 2025 coins were minted in BU quality.

We also released 3,000 commemorative coins and 1,000 sets of 2025 coins in proof quality, which are primarily aimed at collectors of numismatic products, and not for everyday use.

To ensure that the numismatic products can be acquired by as broad a spectrum of collectors as possible, Banka Slovenije has set limits on purchases of the two items of proof quality. These apply to the set of 2025 coins, and to the commemorative coin marking the 100th anniversary of the birth of Miki Muster. These products are no longer freely available for sale, with the exception of the items that were reserved in advance.

The other numismatic products minted in BU quality remain available. The selling prices are published on this link, and information on availability is updated on the numismatic news service on the Banka Slovenije website.

Online ordering

Banka Slovenije introduced advance ordering of its numismatic products online several years ago, and this service is well-known to collectors, who make regular use of it. Advance ordering for both of this year’s releases was opened on 7 April, with orders taken until 19 May. During this period we received more than a thousand orders from individuals, businesses and institutions, whose items were then held in reserve. These items can be picked up until 9 December. Any reserved items not picked up by this time will be released for free sale. Because the majority of the items have not yet been picked up, the opening hours of the Banka Slovenije counters will be extended. Thus today, 5 December, and next Monday and Tuesday (8 and 9 December), in addition to their normal opening hours of 9 am to 1 pm, the counters will be open for the pick-up of reserved numismatic products between 2 and 3.30 pm.

We can already announce that next year will see the release of a commemorative coin marking the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ivan Cankar, and a collector coin marking the Year of the Poet Srečko Kosovel. The invitation to submit advance orders is due to be published in early 2026.
