European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica – Gorizia
The European Capital of Culture is an initiative of the European Union that awards the title to two cities in its Member States. The main objectives of the initiative are to preserve and promote Europe’s cultural diversity, highlight shared characteristics, strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging to a common cultural space, and encourage culture’s contribution to the long-term development of cities. The ECOC 2025 title was awarded to the German city of Chemnitz and the Slovenian city of Nova Gorica (the title holder) in cooperation with the Italian city of Gorizia, forming the first cross-border European Capital of Culture.
The histories, stories, personalities, past, present, and future achievements of creativity, integration, and art in the two Gorizias are presented to Slovenia, Italy, Europe, and the world through the vision and programme GO! BORDERLESS. The European Capital of Culture features a newly revitalised ECOC district along a one-kilometre border strip between two former customs houses. The newly designed and renovated area has become a hub for events and socialising throughout the ECOC year, with a strong focus on green solutions, sustainable renovation, and new amenities for both citizens and visitors.
To mark the European Capital of Culture 2025, the Republic of Slovenia is issuing collector coins. The reverse side of the coin depicts elements from the circular mosaic that can be seen in Europe Square, between the two Gorizias. A single, long element runs between the words NOVA and GORICA, symbolising the connection between the two neighbouring towns. The reinforced font of 25 and GO further emphasises the ECOC motif. On the obverse side, the mosaic pieces are rearranged in a new pattern, scattered to form a fresh image, symbolising the emergence of new ideas, cooperation, and creativity.
