List of BICs

A payment account is an account held by a payment service provider in the name of one or more payment service users which is used for the execution of payment transactions. A transaction account is a type of payment account held only by a bank established in the Republic of Slovenia or by a branch of a Member State bank in the Republic of Slovenia in the name of one or more payment service users, which may also be used for other purposes related to the provision of banking services. One form of transaction account is the payment account with basic features, which all Slovenian banks offering transaction accounts are obliged to provide and is primarily intended for consumers who can not open a transaction account due to (non)residential and/or financial status. The fiduciary account also has the status of a transaction account, which may be opened by a (specific) holder in their own name, but for the account of third parties.

Every consumer has the option of switching a payment account held with a payment service provider in Slovenia. The switching process is regulated in detail by the Payment Services, Services for Issuing Electronic Money and Payment Systems Act (ZPlaSSIED).

The International Bank Account Number (IBAN) was introduced in response to the growing need to improve the effectiveness of the execution of payments, particularly cross-border payments. The main advantage of a standardised bank account structure is that it allows the automatic processing and routing of payments. Payments processed in this way are executed more rapidly, at lower cost, and with significantly less possibility of error.

The IBAN structure is designed to allow unique identification, based on which it is possible to differentiate the country of the payment service provider, the payment service provider that manages the account, and the account holder.

The payment account number is composed of 19 alphanumeric characters, broken down into the following groups in the order prescribed:

1. the country code for Slovenia (d),

2. the check digits of the payment account (e), and

3. the part of the payment account number that corresponds to the BBAN within the IBAN, and is broken down into the following groups in the order prescribed:

   • the national identification number of the IBAN provider and its organisational units (b);

   • the identification number of the holder of the payment account with the IBAN provider (a);

   • the BBAN check digits (c).

A detailed description of the IBAN structure in each country (the IBAN Registry) can be found on the SWIFT website. Slovenia’s IBAN structure is governed by the Regulation on the content and use of the Slovenian structure of the international bank account number.

Transaction accounts register

Data about transaction accounts and holders of transaction accounts is collected in the transaction accounts register, which is administered by the Agency of the Republic of Slovenia for Public Legal Records and Related Services (AJPES).

The management of the transaction accounts register is defined in the ZPlaSSIED, with access to the data being granted by AJPES. Data about the transaction accounts of business entities is public, while data about the transaction accounts of individuals is confidential and can only be obtained by those authorised to do so.

Identification code and BIC

The purpose of the national identification code is to identify the IBAN provider, and it is used for the derivation of the business identifier code (the BIC, which is assigned by SWIFT) of the final payee on the basis of its IBAN.

The BIC (also known as the SWIFT code) is used for the automatic identification and routing of financial transactions, and provides a unique identification for financial and non-financial institutions.
