We invite you to join us for Prešeren Day at Banka Slovenije’s Museum and Mala galerija Banke Slovenije

January 19, 2026

The programme at the Banka Slovenije museum will begin at 11 am, when we will enjoy the company of our youngest visitors, which is followed by a guided tour for young people and adults at 1 pm, and then the Atlas’s Secret team game. The Hunt for Lost Money digital game will also be running all day. Meanwhile the Mala Galerija will welcome visitors on this special holiday to see the Biodesign challenges exhibition.

All of the events are free of charge, although it is necessary to register in advance for the activities at the museum by telling us which event you wish to take part in. This should be done by Friday, 6 February (subject to availability of places) by emailing [email protected]. The number of places available, with the exception of the Hunt for Lost Money, is limited.

Children’s creative workshop at the Banka Slovenije museum at 11 am

The Slovene Cultural Holiday will begin at the Banka Slovenije museum at 11 am with a creative workshop aimed at children aged 8 to 12. Following an introduction in which we will learn something about the most interesting exhibits in the museum, feel the weight of a gold bar, and have a chance to sit on a chair made of destroyed banknotes, we will transform into artists: each child will design a special coin made of cardboard, drawn exactly to their inspiration, and we will make sure that everyone gets to know about the security elements of coins and banknotes. The workshop is for children without any need for parental accompaniment.

Guided tour of the Banka Slovenije museum with the Atlas’s Secret game at 1 pm

Young people and adults are invited to a guided tour at 1 pm, after which you will be able to play the Atlas’s Secret team game. On the tour you will learn about the key tasks of the central bank, go deep into the history of payments and currency in independent Slovenia, feel the weight of a gold bar, and find out some interesting facts about gold. You will also see Slovenia’s commemorative coins and the general circulation coins of other countries, test the authenticity of your banknotes, and learn plenty of other interesting things. All of this will be excellent preparation for a game of Atlas’s Secret, which will take place immediately after the guided tour.

This is a team game in which you will get to know some basic financial terms, learn about the key tasks of the central bank and explore the museum exhibits. The aim of the game is to reveal the code that unlocks a safe where a prize is waiting for each of the players. The game is for teams (of two or three), and can be played by school and university students and by adults, and is run when there are a sufficient number of players.

Free viewing of the Banka Slovenije museum between 3 and 6 pm

The doors of the museum will remain open to visitors on the day even after the aforementioned events. You are welcome to visit the museum without any advance booking between 3 pm and 6 pm. During this time you can tour the museum under your own steam, although you will need ID to show at reception on the ground floor. There is no need to register in advance.

Hunt for Lost Money all day

If on the holiday you find yourself strolling around the centre of the city, we invite you to try the Hunt for Lost Money digital game. The game takes place outside, close to our museum. You start the game by using the QR code found on posters in the vicinity of the museum on Cankarjeva ulica, or via a link that will be published on the day on our social media. During the game you get to move between specific points in the city with a link to the tolar, Slovenia’s first and only independent currency. You can play the game as a team or on your own, and you will need a mobile phone and about half an hour to play. Everyone who successfully completes the game and reports to the museum at Cankarjeva 1 (second floor) by 6 pm will receive a gift.

Viewing of the Biodesign challenges exhibition at the Mala Galerija between 11 am and 7 pm

The Biodesign challenges exhibition can be seen at the Mala Galerija on the holiday. The exhibition features three projects by students on the master’s in industrial design at the University of Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Art and Design that were developed for the Biodesign Challenge 2025 international competition, with the What remains? project reaching the finals and being exhibited in New York at the Parsons School of Design and at the MoMA in June 2025. Banka Slovenije’s Mala Galerija will be open on Prešeren Day from 11 am to 7 pm. No registration is required and admission is free.
