As part of our climate strategy, Banka Slovenije continues to strengthen its holdings of green, social, and sustainable bonds. In 2025, we increased our holdings of these bonds to EUR 748 million, an increase of EUR 122 million compared to the end of 2024, thereby achieving our first medium-term climate target. Last year, we also reduced the weighted average carbon intensity of our non-financial corporate bond portfolio by approximately 50% and that of our equity portfolio by 74%. Our strategy of socially responsible and sustainable investing reduces the climate risks to which we are exposed through our own financial assets, while also providing broader support for the transition to a low-carbon society.
Banka Slovenije is following the EU climate neutrality strategy and is pursuing a strategy of socially responsible and sustainable investing, adopted in 2023. Accordingly, we publish climate-related disclosures for our own financial assets each year. The aim is to contribute to greater transparency with regard to climate risks and opportunities within Banka Slovenije’s own financial assets, and at the same time to increase public awareness and understanding regarding climate risks and opportunities.
Holdings of green, social, and sustainable bonds
Over the past eight years, we have significantly increased our holdings of green, social, and sustainable bonds. By increasing investments of this kind, last year we continued to support the financing of projects that actively contribute to the decarbonisation of the economy and to the general improvement of the public’s socioeconomic position. Our holdings of such bonds amounted to just EUR 32 million in 2018, less than 1% of our own financial assets. By the end of 2025, we held EUR 748 million of these bonds, representing around 11.5% of our own financial assets. The holdings increased by EUR 122 million last year, primarily due to a general increase in Banka Slovenije’s own financial assets.
We also reduced the weighted average carbon intensity of our non-financial corporate bond and equity portfolios by approximately 50% and 74%, respectively. As a result, these portfolios now have a weighted average carbon intensity approximately 81% and 84% lower, respectively, than that of the comparable benchmark indices.
Banka Slovenije targets for the years ahead
In accordance with the EU climate neutrality strategy, our long-term target is to come as close as possible to net zero greenhouse gas emissions in our own financial assets by 2050. We will therefore continue to work towards the gradual improvement of the climate-related metrics of our own financial assets.
To achieve our long-term target, we are pursuing two medium-term targets, which we aim to achieve by the end of 2030 at the latest. We will continue investing in green, social, and sustainable bonds, with a target of at least EUR 800 million by the end of 2030, and reducing the carbon footprint of our investments in private sector issuers, i.e. corporate bonds (financial and non-financial), covered bonds, and equities.
