Banka Slovenije will issue gold and silver medallions to mark the 30th anniversary of its establishment, which we will celebrate next year. Through online voting, an artistic solution was selected that depicts the co-dependence of the country and the central bank using points. The 30 points on the front side of the medallion represent Banka Slovenije’s growth during this period, while points are arranged in the shape of Slovenia on the reverse side. The medallions, for which collectors have already expressed interest, are expected to be on sale from June 2021 on at Banka Slovenije counters.

Banka Slovenije is planning to issue gold and silver medallions next year, when it will celebrate the 30th anniversary of its establishment. To that end, we announced a public competition this summer, with anonymous entries, for the design of artistic solutions. We received 16 solutions in the scope of the competition. An expert committee narrowed entries down to the most appropriate artistic solutions for depiction on Banka Slovenije’s medallion. The citizens of Slovenia then chose between three different solutions in an online survey.

Figure 1: Selected artistic solution

The winner, with the vast majority of votes (64%), was a solution that used points as the central artistic element to depict the co-dependence of the country and central bank. Thirty points are arranged in the form of square with the inscription ‘Banka Slovenije’ on the front side, while points are arranged randomly on the reverse side to form the image of Slovenia. The points of the front side represent Banka Slovenije’s growth from its establishment to the present day, while the size of the points on the reverse side reflect Slovenia’s population density.

Taking second place (with 24% of the votes) was an artistic solution that depicted Banka Slovenije’s concern for balance and stability, while third place (with 12% of the votes) was captured by an artistic solution depicting the co-dependence of the country and central bank using a graph. A total of 855 citizens participated in the survey.

The gold and silver medallions are expected to be on sale from June 2021 on at a price that will be set prior to the start of sales, depending on trends in commodity prices. Also on sale with the new medallions will be the gold and silver medallions issued by Banka Slovenije to mark the 20th anniversary of its establishment that were not previously available for purchase.
