Background

CashEDI

Cash electronic data interchange (CashEDI)

CashEDI is an international communications system that consists of a list of recommendations for using GS1 standards in cash logistics. The system is designed for the fast, reliable transfer of data, and the possibility of traceability for individual transport units.

The GS1 standards are one of two sets of standards approved by the ECB for use in cross-border cash logistics. Banka Slovenije began applying them in its operations in 2013. Since that time it has only been possible to exchange electronic data on cash transactions with Banka Slovenije by using the GS1 standards. The establishment of the GS1 standards at Banka Slovenije has allowed all professional cash handlers to exchange information between themselves or with Banka Slovenije during the execution of transactions to supply cash to the market, thereby increasing the efficiency and security of cash logistics.

The Rulebook on the approach to the transportation and security of cash and other high-value shipments entered into force on 1 January 2017, via which the Ministry of the Interior prescribed the mandatory application of the ISO/IEC 15459 standard, of which the GS1 standards are a component, in the recording and tracking or individual cash shipments. The application of the aforementioned standard is mandatory for all holders of licences for the transportation and security of cash and other high-value shipments after a transition period of three years from the entry into force of the rulebook.

To maximise the positive impact of standardisation, Banka Slovenije also promotes the application of the standard at cash-in-transit companies, commercial banks and their customers, and other stakeholders in the logistics chain for supplying cash to the market.

GS1 standards

The GS1 standards are designed to standardise operations between different users and business systems irrespective of information system, language, or environment. In setting our procedures rather than technologies, they facilitate interoperability between business partners.

Standardisation in the area of supplying cash to the market brings benefits in:

  • the planning of inventories and capacity,

  • the tracking of orders and shipments,

  • the recirculation of banknotes, the sorting of banknotes by quality, and the corresponding reporting,

  • the optimisation of supplies and the increased reliability of the process at multiple service providers and transport providers (in case of problems, another partner is able to step into the process simply),

  • new and better services in the supervision of ATMs,

  • supervision of cassettes in ATMs,

  • supervision of transport units (strongboxes, bags, etc.).

For the successful application of this document and the introduction of processes into business practice, it is necessary to uphold the rules of the GS1 system, which in particular requires the correct and complete identification of all participating elements, such as business partners, locations, transport units, shipments and the corresponding individual articles.

Identification keys

The GS1 system sets out several identification keys and other data attributes used in a variety of business scenarios.

GTIN

(Global Trade Item Number)

The GTIN is used to uniquely identify a trade item (banknotes, coins and services). The ECB is responsible for designating euro banknotes and coins, and publishes the relevant list. Commemorative coins have their own national identification numbers, and Banka Slovenije is responsible for their designation.

GLN

(Global Location Number)

The GLN is used to identify locations and legal entities.

SSCC

(Serial Shipment Container Code)

The SSCC is an identification key used to uniquely identify a logistic unit, thus ensuring traceability in each step of the transaction.

GRAI

(Global Returnable Asset Identifier)

The GRAI is the identifier of returnable assets.

GSIN

(Global Shipment Identification Number)

The GSIN is a global identification number that denotes a logic group of physical units for the purposes of transportation of a shipment.

Barcodes

Barcodes are an important part of the identification system, providing for the fast and reliable transfer of the identification number from the label on the physical transport unit into the information system. The use of linear barcodes in EAN-13 and GS1-128 symbology is agreed in cash logistics.

Messaging system

In the cash logistics process partners use electronic messages to communicate their intentions or activities to one another. They are based on the GS1 XML standard, which contains an XML scheme for various types of message, including orders, delivery notes, invoices, inventory planning and logistics. Each message has a precise structure, and contains the agreed data needed by the participating partners.

The following messages are used in cash logistics:
