Succession: dialogue with graphic art

Succession: dialogue with graphic art

Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana

February 18, 2022 — March 10, 2022

The project was conceived as an intergenerational exchange of ideas and opinions between three generations of artists, and a showcase of their relationship with graphic art. Organised into six groups, the students talked to established artists in the fields of graphic art, painting and intermedia who teach regularly or occasionally at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design of the University of Ljubljana (Zora Stančič, Mojca Zlokarnik, Arjan Pregl, Bojan Gorenec, Borut Vogelnik, and Admir Ganić) to debate which of the artists who have studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design they would choose as their own role model, radical experimenter or inspiration.

In the collection of student graphic art that has been built up at the Academy of Fine Arts and Design since 1946, one of the largest public collections of graphic art in Slovenia, with more than 45,000 works, we compiled folders of the student graphic art of the role models chosen by the teachers. In reviewing these art works, current students gained an understanding of the principles of pedagogical practice, stylistic shifts in art, and various technological solutions. From all the student works, each group then chose one work that they wanted to focus on and interpret. The starting points were high-definition reproductions of the selected works. The road to interpretations in various media, video, analogue photography, digital collage, animation, video interviews and textual analysis between the verbal and the visual, was left open. What arose were extraordinarily fresh, experimental, innovative and insightful creative interpretations of works from the Academy of Fine Arts and Design student graphic art collection.

This graphic art project was born at the intersection between the systematic documentation of works of art, which is undertaken according to specific expert parameters and needs to be learned by students during their studies, but at the same time it innovatively tested the possibilities of attractive and fresh approaches to presenting the artistic legacy, which can be made engaging to a new audience with the help of technology.
