March 17, 2022 — April 14, 2022

Ill-conceived and unarticulated urban development contributes greatly to environmental and social crises. The current situation demands a new and serious reflection on the use of existing and new spaces and their possible transformation through suitable architectural interventions.

One way of redeveloping and reactivating the urban fabric is to develop architectural interventions in lots of unusual shapes and sizes, where development seems impossible (i.e., odd lots).

Architectural projects proposed by the students explore the unused potentials of these odd lots in various urban contexts.

Lots that are perceived as too narrow, too long, inaccessible, dark or in any other way unusual and unattractive for commercial use hold potential that can be activated using an alternative approach. In this way new, unexpected and unknown programmatic and architectural solutions can be introduced into the city, which can change the way the city functions, as well as its architectural landscape and public spaces. Together with the odd sites mentioned above, the student projects displayed introduce specific architectural, typological and programmatic solutions to our times, which are marked by social, environmental, political, health and other crises, which in turn form starting points for architectural interventions.

The project was created in a dialogue between students at the University of Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture, mentored by Vasa J. Perović and Anja Vidic, and students of the TU Wien Faculty of Architecture and Planning, mentored by Tina Gregorič, Gordon Selbach and Katharina Urbanek.

The students of these two faculties cover sites in Ljubljana and Vienna. With this approach, they analyse the selected locations in both cities in a dialectic manner, from the outside.
