Lighting Guerrilla Laboratory: Video Transformations

Mala Galerija Banke Slovenije is showcasing the works created at two workshops that were held this year as part of the Lighting Guerrilla Laboratory educational platform. At the first workshop (mentored by Nika Erjavec and Matic Šubelj), aimed at students at the Ljubljana Academy of Fine Arts and Design (ALUO), the participants focused on video hacking, exploring various analogue and digital video techniques (dirty mixing, circuit bending and glitch art). They reworked old security cameras and used them to create video loops, with which they produced a series of intimate video ambiances or installations at the gallery.

At the second workshop, intended for experienced artists and ALUO students (mentored by Blaž Pavlica and Gašper Milkovič Biloslav), the participants obtained detailed insight into the practice of coding visuals on the online open-source platform Hydra. They explored the video feedback technique and created an analogue-digital configuration that is displayed at the gallery in the form of an interactive installation.

Lina Steiner and Maruša Uhan: Retrograde

In their joint project, Lina Steiner and Maruša Uhan used a holographic projection to outline the concept of retrograde motion. According to the artists, both the manner of the project’s execution and the planetary phenomenon itself are mere illusions. They playfully combine the complex astronomical ideas of the holographic universe – conceived as a three-dimensional reality saved on a two-dimensional surface – with scientific as well as astrological theories of the retrograde motion of the planets, which, due to their apparent backwards movement, threaten to deviate from the norm of planetary motion. With the concept of retrograde motion, the artists highlight the fact that since time immemorial people have been susceptible to illusions precisely because they have believed that everything revolves around them.

Mala galerija Banke Slovenije, display window 4 May–21 June 2024, from 9.30 pm onwards

Lina Steiner graduated from the Video, Animation and New Media Department at ALUO in Ljubljana, where she is currently completing a master’s degree in printmaking. She combines most of her works with sound and, first and foremost, films and edits music videos according to DIY principles. In addition, she also works as a music director at Radio Študent, where she has also honed her skills as a music journalist, and as a projectionist at the Domžale Movie Theatre. Occasionally she also sings folksongs with fellow enthusiasts.

Maruša Uhan graduated from the Minerva Art Academy in Groningen, the Netherlands. Her works can be read as commentary on people’s daily "operation" and contemporary views. She has held several solo and group exhibitions in Slovenia and abroad. In 2021, she took over part of the organisation and curatorship at the new gallery Portal 2-7-7-7-8 in the Špica area in Ljubljana.
