History is a series of turning points, discontinuities and transfers. Al-Khwarizmi, the ninth-century Uzbek mathematician, took up the Indian decimal system and began the use of Arabic numerals, and it is after him that we get the name algorithm for a computer process that generates a parallel computable reality. At the moment of contact between human culture, which on multiple levels is seen as problematic, and the gradual advance of artificial intelligence, the paradigm is shifting: power relationships and approaches to signification are being redefined.
Students of computer science and informatics, multimedia, and industrial and graphic design are setting themselves to articulate the links between the visual communication of concepts, computer vision approaches, and images from the collection of works from the history of art. The results are a number of prototypes derived from various visions and the focuses of individual disciplines. Rather than being mere aphorisms, the presented projects are highly particular, targeted and experimental responses to the challenges of understanding images in a hybrid human-algorithmic world. The treatment of the issue ranges from planning user interfaces for viewing major collections of images by inventing new approaches for users via contextualisation and socialisation, to building links between the virtual and real-life museum on the participatory platforms of educational games and photogrammetrically enhanced virtuality, and from conducting computer analysis of the language of art and film, to imagining and animating mathematical concepts. The exhibition will also feature the Pesmomat poetic machine and a special musical bench.
