Roundtable: Long-term viability of economic growth and its structural challenges

October 10, 2025

At a time when the domestic economy faces challenges related to the demographic picture, and slow growth in productivity and investment, Banka Slovenije’s aims to create space for an in-depth discussion of how to ensure economic growth that is sustainable and viable.

To this end, we are organising holding an event on Friday, 10 October, running from 10 am to 12 pm, under the title Long-term viability of economic growth and its structural challenges, which will shed light on key factors in productivity and long-term economic growth in Slovenia.

The welcome address will be given by Acting Governor Primož Dolenc. The broader geopolitical and macroeconomic situation in the euro area will be examined by Matjaž Sušec, head of policy strategy and institutional relations at the European Stability Mechanism.

As an introduction to the roundtable, Arjana Brezigar, director of the Analysis and Research Department at Banka Slovenije, will present the latest findings from Banka Slovenije’s analysis, which show changes in the structure of economic growth, weak investment activity, and slow productivity growth amid an ageing workforce, a tight labour market and adverse demographic trends.

This will be followed by a roundtable discussion of the challenges and opportunities that lie in wait for the Slovenian economy. The guests will highlight their experiences and views of this issue – each in their own field of expertise – and will contribute to a deeper understanding of the key structural challenges.

The roundtable will be chaired by Ms Brezigar, and will feature:

  • Maja Bednaš, acting director of the Institute of Macroeconomic Analysis and Development,

  • Polona Domadenik Muren, professor at the School of Economics and Business at the University of Ljubljana,

  • Branko Gabrovec, general director of the National Institute of Public Health, and

  • Sandi Meke, head of employers’ services at the Employment Service of Slovenia.

You are cordially invited to join us.

The event will be held in Slovene, and will take place in the main hall of Banka Slovenije. A live video broadcast will also be available. It is free to attend the event, and registrations via the online form (in Slovene only) will be open until Friday, 3 October 2025.
