The coming months will mark two important milestones in Slovenia's history: 8 October 2026 marks 35 years since the introduction of the tolar, the first currency of independent Slovenia, while 1 January 2027 marks 20 years since Slovenia adopted the euro and joined the Eurosystem.
At Banka Slovenije, we recognise that the journey from one milestone to the next reflects the development of a young nation, its economic progress and stability, and its integration into the European community. As Slovenia celebrates the 35th anniversary of its independence, we invite you to reflect on a period when a national currency became a powerful symbol of statehood, sovereignty and national identity.
In cooperation with the National and University Library and the National Museum of Slovenia, we are preparing an exhibition entitled From the Tolar to the Euro: Images of Our Money.
The exhibition will open on Thursday, 8 October 2026, at 5:00 p.m. at the National and University Library of Slovenia, where it will remain on display until February 2027.
The opening addresses will be delivered by:
Primož Dolenc, Governor of Banka Slovenije
Jana Kolar, Director General of the National and University Library, and
Mateja Kos Zabel, Director of the National Museum of Slovenia.
The formal opening will be followed by a guided tour of the exhibition and a reception.
The exhibition will trace the key milestones in Slovenia’s monetary journey, from independence and the introduction of the first Slovenian payment notes, tolar banknotes and coins, to the adoption of the euro, the currency we use today.
