Fashion has always reflected the times in which it is born, and the ways that we understand ourselves and the world around us. Just like society, fashion is continually changing; it responds to cultural and technological shifts, and raises questions of identity, sustainability, consumerism, and our relationship with the body. Where once it mainly shaped notions of the ideal, today it increasingly questions them. So what does it mean to be imperfect? And who decides what is perfect?
The Imperfections exhibition combines student collections that explore the theme through the body, emotions, materials, and the creative process. It opens up various perspectives, often personal, on what deviates from the expected and the ideal. What happens when we stop viewing imperfection as a mistake, and start to see it as a space for exploration? The exhibited works depart from the expected order and functionality: silhouettes become deformed, materials crease, layer, tear and proliferate, surfaces become irregular and unpredictable.
Personal experience, sorrow, introversion, childhood memories, and vulnerability are translated into form, texture, and material. Images of the apocalypse, blood, rot, and decay depict disintegration as part of the continuous process of change and transformation. Textiles are laser-cut, sewn, woven, crocheted, embroidered and dyed, while old sails, ropes, yarns and lace take on new, often irregular structures.
For the young designers, it is precisely this departure from the ideal that becomes a means of expression. Through the design process they explore vulnerability, change, and unpredictability, and question whether imperfection is truly something that needs to be fixed or hidden. Perhaps it is here in the irregular and the unfinished that we might recognise new possibilities of design, and a different form of beauty.
