05/06/2021 / Press release

This year, Banka Slovenije is planning to issue three series of special coins – two series will be collector coins and one commemorative coins. The first collector coins, marking the 300th anniversary of the Škofja Loka Passion, will be available for purchase and in circulation from 12 May. In the autumn, we are planning to issue collector coins on the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Slovenia’s statehood, and commemorative coins to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Provincial Museum for Carniola, the first museum in Slovenia. All the special coins will be on sale at Banka Slovenije counters, at selected branches of Deželna banka Slovenije and at the company Moro & Kunst.

Banka Slovenije points out that collector coins are legal tender only in the territory of the Republic of Slovenia, while commemorative coins can be used in all countries of the euro area, at their nominal value.

The central element of the collector coins marking the 300th anniversary of the Škofja Loka Passion is a cross, with the meeting point of the straight lines representing the centre of the events – the streets of Škofja Loka. Around the cross on the front side, three broken lines represent not just the auditorium but also the crown of thorns. Each of the 13 vertices of the crown represent one of the depictions in the Škofja Loka Passion. The artwork for the coins was designed by Matej Štanta.

The following quantities and prices of collector coins will be available:

  • 500 gold coins priced at EUR 440,
  • 1,000 silver coins priced at EUR 50,
  • 40,000 ordinary quality bimetallic coins priced at EUR 3,
  • 750 bimetallic coins in proof quality, packed separately in plastic capsules, priced at EUR 17.

These collector coins will be available from 12 May at Banka Slovenije counters, at selected branches of Deželna banka Slovenije and at the company Moro & Kunst, with protocols in place for the epidemiological situation and associated measures and recommendations.

In the autumn, we are planning to issue two other series of special coins, namely collector coins on the 30th anniversary of the Republic of Slovenia’s statehood, and commemorative coins to mark the 200th anniversary of the founding of the Provincial Museum for Carniola, the first museum in Slovenia. We will notify the public in due time of the exact date when these coins will be available.
